WAR
MEMORIALS
"SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD"
"But the past is
yet the same,-and War's a bloody game...
Have you forgotten yet?...
Look down, and swear by the slain of the War
that you'll never forget."
Siegfried Sassoon
For some time now I have been interested in War Memorials.I personally feel
that they are a very important part of our country's heritage and I can never
pass one by without wanting to peruse the names and details of our heroic dead
of two world wars.
I first became interested in this subject when I was stationed with the British Army in Singapore in the early 1970's.Anyone who has ever visited such immense wargraves such as at Kranji can only be overwhelmed by the sacrifice that so many people of all races and religions gave so that we might enjoy the freedoms and democracy that we so often take for granted in this day and age.
On moving to Oxfordshire from my native Middlesex 15 years ago I decided to try and collect as many names on local memorials as possible. This was for two reasons. Firstly it gave me a chance to visit, whilst walking, some of the beautiful villages and churches to be found in this area. Secondly I thought that maybe in the future somebody might want to find the memorial site of a relative or friend that died in battle. Consequently I have started a database of all the names that I can collate and present them in a way that is available to anyone who has access to the web. I hope, also, in the future to be able to show some graphic images of the various memorials to be found in this area.
Obviously this project will take some time and as I collect more material I will update this site. Please bear with me and feel free to contact me with any criticism or guidance. Thank you.
