50th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment (Prince of
WalesRangers)

Early History and Organization.—The Regiment was organized on 3rd
May, 1867, as the 57th Peterborough Battalion of Infantry. On 17th January,
1880, it became 57th Battalion of Infantry "Peter-borough Rangers", and
on 8th May, 1900, 57th Regiment "Peterborough Rangers". On 15th June, 1920,
it was further reorganized and redesignated The Peterborough Rangers. On
15th December, 1936, the 3rd The Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons (originally
organized on 30th April, 1875) and Headquarters and "C" Company, 4th Machine
Gun Battalion, were amalgamated with The Peter-borough Rangers and the
unit designated The Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough Regiment) (M.G.)
On 5th March, 1942, the unit was converted to an infantry rifle role and
"M.G." was dropped from the designation. The present title was adopted
on 1St April, 1946, upon conversion of the Regiment to a heavy anti-aircraft
unit comprising the 149th, 150th, and 151St Heavy Anti-Aircraft Batteries.
The Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough
Regiment) was mobilized on 5th March, 1942, in Peterborough, Ont., and
after a month’s training at Niagara-on-the-Lake, moved on 23rd June, 1942,
to British Columbia, serving there until December, 1944, when it moved
to Debert, N.S. On 10th January, 1945, it arrived in the United Kingdom,
where it was disbanded to provide infantry reinforcements.
